How to become a supplier on Alibaba?
By Yaurapulse
Supplier Verification & CommunicationBecoming a supplier on Alibaba is not as difficult as many people think. The process is straightforward: register a company, create an Alibaba supplier account, choose a membership plan, and pass a basic verification. The main barrier is cost, not complexity.
If you are a Chinese manufacturer or trading company looking to sell to international buyers, Alibaba is the largest B2B marketplace in the world. It gives you access to buyers from over 200 countries. But getting started requires understanding the fees, the verification process, and what each membership level actually gets you.
Here is how to become a supplier on Alibaba, step by step.
Step 1: Register a company
Before you can open an Alibaba supplier account, you need a registered business. Alibaba does not allow individuals to sell as suppliers. You need a company registration.
Nowadays registering a company is much easier than before. Among the three business types of verified suppliers, the trading company is the easiest to set up. A couple of people setting up a trading company and renting an office can become a verified supplier if they pay the fees.
The three business types are:
First, manufacturers or factories. These are companies that produce the goods themselves. They have production lines, equipment, and workers. Factory verification is more complex because Alibaba wants to see actual production capability.
Second, trading companies. These are companies that buy from factories and resell to international buyers. They do not produce goods themselves, but they handle export, logistics, and communication. Trading companies are the easiest type to register because they do not need production equipment.
Third, service providers. These are companies that offer sourcing, inspection, or logistics services. They connect buyers with factories and manage the supply chain.
Which type you choose depends on your business model. If you own a factory, register as a manufacturer. If you buy from factories and export, register as a trading company. If you help buyers find products, register as a service provider.
Step 2: Choose your Alibaba membership plan
Alibaba offers different membership plans for suppliers. The two main ones are Gold Supplier and Verified Supplier. However, the Gold Supplier membership has been offline for new sign-ups. The current standard is the Verified Supplier membership.
There are three Alibaba membership packages: basic, standard, and premium. The exact price varies by region.
Alibaba serves 200+ countries, and the membership package plans vary slightly from one region to another. For accurate information, you need to contact Alibaba customer service agents.
After consulting Alibaba China Service Team, the precise charges are as follows:
Gold suppliers pay the membership fee of $4,700 per year. This was the old membership level.
Verified suppliers pay a higher membership price of $12,500 per year. This is the current standard membership in China.
The Verified Supplier membership price is much more expensive than the previous Gold membership fee, almost triple. But it comes with more benefits.
Since the membership price for verified suppliers has almost tripled, they have access to more product showcases. Also, Alibaba offers accurate traffic and more marketing data to help verified suppliers rank better.
The more fees suppliers pay, the more rights they enjoy. Since the gold membership has been offline, suppliers have to spend more. Alibaba wants to charge more membership fees from suppliers.
Step 3: Understand what Verified Supplier actually means
The Verified Supplier badge is often misunderstood by buyers. Many think it means the supplier is reliable and produces high-quality products. That is not what it means.
The badge simply means the supplier paid an annual fee and passed a basic third-party check. It is a membership label, not a quality filter. So buyers should not assume a supplier is reliable just because they are verified.
Becoming a verified supplier is not as difficult as you think. Registering a company is much easier at present. On the other hand, among the three business types of verified suppliers, the trading company is the easiest. A couple of people setting up a trading company and renting an office can be a verified supplier if they pay the fees.
By spending marketing expenses, suppliers get more business chances. While for Alibaba, it is part of the income.
Verified Supplier is essentially a paid Alibaba membership, without any relation to the supplier's quality assurance. After paying the fee and going through an independent third-party inspection like SGS, any supplier can be verified, such as a trading company with only a couple of people.
So as for membership benefits, Chinese verified suppliers enjoy more than gold suppliers. That is just as it should be. After all, the price has almost tripled. Besides more showcases, verified suppliers can get accurate traffic and more marketing data. Alibaba offers such benefits to help them rank better.
Essentially, the verified or gold label is obtainable through payment. Thus, sourcing from gold or verified suppliers does not mean everything will be fine.
Step 4: Complete the verification process
After paying the membership fee, Alibaba will arrange for a third-party verification company, such as SGS, to inspect your business. The verification includes checking your business license, office or factory location, and basic business information.
As explained by Alibaba China Service Team, gold and verified suppliers are certified. But verified suppliers in China enjoy 40 product showcases while gold suppliers access 10 only. Additionally, there are added enterprise capability and main product certifications plus a 3-minute factory audit video for verified suppliers. These can help verified suppliers to earn the trust and confidence of overseas buyers.
The verification process is basic. The inspector checks that your company exists at the registered address. They do not deeply inspect your production lines, equipment, or quality control processes. A trading company can pass verification by showing a rented office and a business license.
You can see the cooperative factory from the video. Note that "cooperation" means the plant is not necessarily owned by the supplier. For example, if someone wants to open an Alibaba store, they shoot a video of their cooperative factory and submit it for review. Generally, the video can pass the certification by a third-party inspector. In other words, the supplier's real situations are not checked in detail, such as production lines and equipment.
So the verification process is more about confirming your business exists than evaluating your product quality.
Step 5: Set up your supplier profile
Once verified, you need to set up your Alibaba supplier profile. This includes your company introduction, product catalog, certifications, and contact information.
Your profile is what buyers see when they find you on Alibaba. A good profile should clearly explain what products you sell, what your company does, and why buyers should trust you.
Upload your product catalog with clear photos, specifications, prices, and MOQ. The more complete your product information, the more likely buyers will contact you.
Add your company certifications, such as ISO, CE, FCC, or other product certifications. These help build trust with international buyers.
Include your contact information, such as email, phone, and WhatsApp. Buyers want to reach you quickly.
Step 6: Understand the transaction fees
In addition to the membership fee, Alibaba charges suppliers a transaction fee for each order.
Alibaba charges suppliers 2% to 3% per transaction, with a cap of $100 to $350. While this fee is officially paid by suppliers, in practice, most suppliers include it in product pricing, so buyers often end up paying for it.
Alibaba claims that Trade Assurance service is free for buyers. For Chinese suppliers from Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, the service is free to activate. However, suppliers must pay a transaction fee, typically 2% to 3% of each transaction, with a cap of $100 to $350. This depends on whether the supplier is using the basic or premium Trade Assurance service.
In practice, most Chinese suppliers on Alibaba support Trade Assurance, but they usually add the 2% to 3% fee to the product price, so the buyer ends up paying for it.
This means your actual cost as a supplier includes both the annual membership fee and the transaction fee on each order. Factor these costs into your pricing.
Step 7: Start selling and managing orders
Once your profile is set up, buyers can find you through Alibaba's search or RFQ system. You will start receiving inquiries and orders.
When you receive an order, you need to manage it through Alibaba's system. This includes confirming the order, arranging production, shipping, and handling any disputes.
Make sure to communicate with buyers promptly. Slow response rates can hurt your ranking on Alibaba. Respond to inquiries within 24 hours, preferably sooner.
Use Trade Assurance for orders to build trust with buyers. Trade Assurance holds the buyer's payment in escrow until they confirm receipt. This protects both the buyer and the supplier.
Ship orders on time. Late shipments can lead to disputes and negative reviews. If you cannot ship on time, communicate with the buyer and request a postponement.
You can also use Alibaba's RFQ, or Request for Quotation, system to find buyers. Buyers post their product requirements on the RFQ board, and suppliers can submit quotes. This is a good way to find new customers, especially for niche products.
Customers do not pay anything directly to use Alibaba's RFQ service. Suppliers' Alibaba accounts, however, can come with membership costs. Indirectly, the membership payment is the price for using Alibaba's RFQ services.
Using an RFQ does not usually need minimum order quantities. Both large and small purchases can use the process. Suppliers should state what they can offer, and interested buyers will reach out.
What does it cost to be a supplier on Alibaba
The total cost of being an Alibaba supplier includes:
First, the annual membership fee. For Verified Suppliers in China, this is $12,500 per year. For other regions, the price may vary.
Second, the transaction fee. This is 2% to 3% of each order value, capped at $100 to $350 per transaction. This fee is charged on every Trade Assurance order.
Third, optional marketing costs. Alibaba offers various marketing tools, such as keyword advertising and product showcases. These are optional but can help increase your visibility.
Fourth, product photography and catalog creation. You need professional photos and descriptions for your products. This may require hiring a photographer or doing it yourself.
Fifth, verification costs. The third-party verification is usually included in the membership fee, but you may need to pay for additional certifications or audits.
Is it worth becoming an Alibaba supplier
Whether becoming an Alibaba supplier is worth it depends on your business.
If you are a manufacturer or trading company with products that international buyers want, Alibaba can be a powerful sales channel. It gives you access to millions of buyers worldwide.
But the costs are significant. The $12,500 annual membership fee plus transaction fees means you need to generate enough sales to cover these costs. If you are a small company just starting out, the membership fee may be too high.
Also, competition on Alibaba is fierce. There are thousands of suppliers selling similar products. You need to stand out through better pricing, quality, or service.
If you are a buyer reading this, the key takeaway is that the Verified Supplier badge is not a quality guarantee. It just means the supplier paid the fee and passed a basic check. You still need to verify the supplier yourself, check samples, and inspect bulk orders.
Bottom Line
Becoming a supplier on Alibaba is straightforward. Register a company, pay the membership fee of $12,500 per year for Verified Supplier status, pass a basic third-party verification, set up your profile, and start selling.
The main cost is the annual membership fee plus the 2% to 3% transaction fee on each order. The main benefit is access to millions of international buyers.
For buyers, the Verified Supplier badge is a paid membership label, not a quality guarantee. A trading company with a couple of people and a rented office can become verified by paying the fee. Always verify suppliers independently, check samples, and inspect bulk orders before releasing payment.
