How to report a scammer on Alibaba?

Alibaba Safety & Buyer Protection

Reporting a scammer on Alibaba is not just about getting your money back. It is about protecting other buyers and keeping the platform safe. When you report a fraudulent supplier, Alibaba can investigate, penalize, or remove the account, preventing the scammer from targeting more people.

Alibaba is one of the largest online wholesale markets in the world. Millions of buyers use it every day. While the platform is reliable overall, there are still scams that people may encounter. For example, a supplier may raise the price when you place the order, higher than the original quotation. Or they may send you a completely different product from what you ordered.

The good news is that Alibaba takes supplier fraud seriously. The platform has dispute resolution processes, investigation teams, and penalties for suppliers who violate the rules. But you need to know how to report effectively, with the right evidence and through the right channels.

Here is how to report a scammer on Alibaba, what evidence you need, and what happens after you report.

First, determine if it is actually a scam

Before you report a supplier as a scammer, make sure you are dealing with fraud and not a simple misunderstanding or communication problem.

Among all the so-called Alibaba scams, 90 percent come from time differences that hinder communication, language barriers, different communication methods, and insufficient confirmation of product details. For example, some buyers confirm samples by photos and videos sent from sellers, and then they find the bulk cargo different from the sample products.

Most suppliers are not likely to think of everything. They follow up orders from different clients simultaneously and cannot focus all their attention on your order, especially when your order is small. So buyers should take the initiative in confirming each detail with the seller.

If the supplier is simply slow to respond or made an honest mistake, try to resolve the issue through communication first. A dispute or report should be your last resort, not your first reaction.

However, if the supplier has taken your money and disappeared, sent you a completely different product, or used fake certificates, that is fraud and you should report it.

Common types of Alibaba scams

Understanding the common scam types helps you identify fraud quickly. Here are the most common ones.

Branded products at very low prices. Scammers sell smartphones, game consoles, and other branded electronics at unbelievably low prices. They claim to be OEM manufacturers. But all branded products have official sales or distribution channels. You can only get genuine products from official stores or reliable online channels. If the price seems too good to be true, it is a scam.

Patent infringement products. Some suppliers sell products that infringe on patents. If you buy these and resell them, your listing may be deactivated, and you may face legal action. This is not always intentional fraud, but it can cause significant losses.

Price increase after placing the order. Some suppliers give you a very competitive quotation to attract your order. As soon as you are about to send the deposit, they ask for a higher price with excuses like raw material costs went up.

Payment to personal accounts. A sales rep contacts you by personal email, requiring payment to their personal account and offering a special discount. This is a common scam. Always pay through Alibaba's Trade Assurance or the supplier's official company account.

Hacked supplier email. Hackers pretend to be the supplier, send you an email saying the bank account has changed, and ask you to pay to a new account. Always verify payment details through a phone call or Alibaba chat, not just email.

Disappearing after receiving payment. The supplier cuts communication and disappears after receiving your payment, before production or delivery.

Sample quality vs. bulk quality. The supplier sends a high-quality sample, but the bulk order is poor quality.

Fake certificates. The supplier uses fake certificates to claim their products comply with your country's regulations.

How to report a scammer through Trade Assurance

If you paid through Trade Assurance, reporting is straightforward. Trade Assurance is Alibaba's buyer protection service that holds your payment until you confirm receipt of the goods.

If the goods received do not meet the specified requirements, you can open a dispute with Alibaba and request a refund within 30 days from the delivery date. This 30-day claim period applies to Level 3 or below buyers. If you are a Level 4 or 5 buyer, the claim period is extended to 60 days.

Once a dispute is submitted, the supplier has 5 days to respond and work toward a solution. If there is no response, you can escalate the issue to Alibaba's dispute team. Alibaba will review the evidence from both you and the supplier. Only with powerful evidence can Alibaba judge that the supplier did not comply with contract terms and take responsibility.

To open a dispute, go to Order Management, find the order, and click Open Dispute. Select the reason for the dispute, describe the problem, and upload your evidence. Be as detailed as possible.

How to report a scammer directly to Alibaba

If you did not pay through Trade Assurance, or if the scam is not related to a specific order, you can report the supplier directly to Alibaba.

Go to the supplier's store page on Alibaba. Look for a Report or Report Abuse button. This is usually located near the supplier's name or contact information.

Click the button and select the type of violation. Common categories include fraud, intellectual property infringement, fake certificates, and other violations.

Provide a detailed description of what happened. Include dates, amounts, and the supplier's actions. The more specific you are, the easier it is for Alibaba to investigate.

Upload your evidence. This is the most important part. Without evidence, Alibaba cannot take action against the supplier.

Submit the report. Alibaba's investigation team will review your report and contact you if they need more information.

If you cannot find the report button on the store page, contact Alibaba customer service. They can guide you through the reporting process or file the report on your behalf.

Evidence you need to collect

Whether you open a dispute or file a direct report, evidence is critical. Make sure to keep these important documents.

A signed copy of a purchase contract or invoice. This proves the terms of your agreement with the supplier.

Documents related to the product specifications. These show what you ordered and what quality standards were agreed upon.

Documents related to design drawings or files. If you customized the product, these prove your design requirements.

A copy of the inspection report. If you hired a third-party inspection company, this report shows the actual condition of the goods.

A copy of all related emails or communication records on Alibaba or WhatsApp, including texts and videos. These show what the supplier promised and what they delivered.

A signed copy of the transaction receipt. This proves you made the payment.

Any pictures or videos of defective goods. Visual evidence is very powerful in dispute cases.

No matter the order size, always inspect the products before shipping from China. You can hire third-party quality inspection companies or sourcing companies to inspect the products. If any issues are found, negotiate solutions with the supplier. If you cannot reach an agreement, the inspection report can serve as evidence to file a dispute on Alibaba, so you will not be left in a passive position.

What happens after you report

After you report a scammer, Alibaba's investigation team will review your case.

First, they will check the evidence you provided. If the evidence is strong and clearly shows the supplier violated Alibaba's rules, they may take action quickly.

Second, they may contact the supplier for their side of the story. The supplier will be given a chance to respond and provide their own evidence.

Third, they will make a decision. If the supplier is found to have committed fraud, Alibaba may take several actions. They may remove the supplier's products, suspend the supplier's account, or permanently ban the supplier from the platform. In serious cases, they may also report the supplier to law enforcement.

If you opened a dispute through Trade Assurance, Alibaba may also order a refund. The refund amount depends on the evidence and the terms of the order. In some cases, you may get a full refund. In other cases, you may get a partial refund.

The dispute process can take several weeks, or up to a month. Both sides submit evidence, and the platform reviews the case step by step. This is normal for a B2B platform, where disputes are handled more like formal business cases than instant refunds.

Buyers can win disputes when sufficient evidence is provided, as long as product specifications, quality standards, and delivery terms are clearly written into the order. This is also why some Chinese suppliers are not fully enthusiastic about Trade Assurance, because they are concerned about malicious refund requests or unreasonable claims.

If you paid outside Alibaba

If you paid the supplier outside of Alibaba, such as through Western Union, MoneyGram, or a direct bank transfer, reporting to Alibaba may not help you get your money back. Alibaba can only protect payments made through its platform.

However, you should still report the supplier to Alibaba. This helps prevent the scammer from targeting other buyers. Alibaba can investigate and remove the supplier's account.

To try to recover your money, you need to take action with your bank or payment provider. If you paid by credit card, you may be able to file a chargeback. If you paid by bank transfer, contact your bank immediately to see if the transfer can be reversed. If you paid through Western Union or MoneyGram, contact their fraud department.

You can also report the scam to your local police or consumer protection agency. Provide them with all the evidence you have. While cross-border fraud is difficult to prosecute, reporting it creates a record that may help in the future.

How to avoid scams in the first place

The best way to deal with scammers is to avoid them in the first place. Here is how.

Use Trade Assurance for all payments. Make your payments to the virtual CITIBANK account automatically created for each Trade Assurance order. Any offline methods cannot protect your payment, and you will likely get scammed.

Do not pay to personal accounts. If a sales rep asks you to pay to their personal account for a discount, refuse. Always pay to the supplier's official company account through Alibaba.

Verify payment details over the phone. If you receive an email saying the supplier's bank account has changed, call the supplier to confirm. Hackers often intercept emails and change payment details.

Check the supplier's verification status. A Verified Supplier badge is a membership badge, not a quality guarantee. But it does mean the supplier has passed some verification checks. Look for suppliers with Gold Supplier status and years of experience on the platform.

Be wary of prices that are too low. If a supplier offers branded products at a fraction of the retail price, it is almost certainly a scam.

Inspect before shipping. No matter the order size, always inspect the products before they ship from China. This catches quality issues before you pay the balance.

Keep detailed records. Save all communication, contracts, invoices, and photos. These records are your evidence if something goes wrong.

Bottom Line

Reporting a scammer on Alibaba is an important step in protecting yourself and other buyers. If you paid through Trade Assurance, open a dispute within 30 days of delivery. The supplier has 5 days to respond, and Alibaba's dispute team will review the evidence.

If you did not pay through Trade Assurance, report the supplier directly through their store page or by contacting customer service. Collect strong evidence, including contracts, communication records, inspection reports, and photos of defective goods.

The dispute process can take several weeks, but buyers who provide sufficient evidence and have clear order terms usually win. While Trade Assurance offers an extra layer of protection, the key is to work with a reliable supplier and use Trade Assurance for all payments.
